  3. Click on a table cell to select it.  Click again or press enter to edit that cell.  Use the first column to disable or remove an entire row.  Entering data in the last row will cause an additional row to appear.

  5. The Static Routes Window allows you to setup how the router software should forward IP datagrams for the listed networks.  When the router receives a datagram, it extracts the destination address and then tries to match it against each table entry to determine the best route.

To match a table entry, the router applies the table Mask to the destination from the datagram and then compares it to the Destination in the table.  The router looks for the longest matching address with the lowest metric to use as the best route.  Once the best route is found, the router forwards the datagram to the Route specified in the table.  The Route will be either a network port on the router (such as Ethernet) for direct delivery, or the address of another Gateway/Router that can forward the datagram on to its destination.

A route marked as default (Def.) has both the Mask and Destination set to zero, so will match any datagram destination.  The Metric helps the router to choose between routes when there is more than one route to the same destination.  The lower the metric, the better the route (fewer hops).  The maximum metric allowed is 15.  You can use the Metric to specify a backup route that will be used if the primary route becomes unavailable.

  11. The RIP (Routing Information Protocol) column indicates whether the Mac IProuter should notify other routers that it can forward datagrams to this Destination.

  13. A "S" in the first column indicates a static route.  To temporarily disable a route, click in the first column of that route until it reads "Off".  To remove a route from the table, click in the first column until an "X" appears.

  15. When you are done editing the Static Routes table, press OK (cmd-return) to save your changes, or Cancel (cmd-period) to restore the previous settings.
